Here I go branching out to middle grade. You can peek at a small synopsis of The Hello Bucket below as well. ☺️ Join me on my creative journey!
For the SCBWI 2025 narrative art contest, the theme was something that seems like a threat but isn’t. This nonthreatening threat was raising a hand in class as a middle school wallflower. Speaking up can be scary but it’s just raising a hand, add something to a conversation. There might be consequences for getting an answer wrong, shame, but you’re not drowning. You are not about to fall off a cliff though it may feel like that. I still struggle with those feelings as an adult!
The Hello Bucket
Greeter Bot 42, chosen name Bucket, seems unable to complete their small talk protocol or even say “hello” when activated. As a Greeter Bot, Bucket must be able to perform this communicator level task to greet all welcome human guests into the facility of Genuinely Intelligent Vital Engineering, or the Museum of G.I.V.E. However in light of recent events an AI level 1 Bot, chosen name Amon, has gone into a murderous rampage, destroying all human faculty members. No one is welcome, no one leaves. Without a human guest, Bucket’s protocol becomes obsolete and there can be no obsolete bots under Amon’s eye. Those bots report to maintenance for reprogramming or… deletion.
Bucket doesn’t want to welcome anyone in. Bucket wants out.
